12-YEAR-OLD BOY GRAVELY
HURT IN SLIDING ACCIDENT

Twelve-year-old James West, son of Mr. and Mrs. Averill West, 217 Haskell street, is reported in very critical condition today at Mercy hospital where he was taken Wednesday evening for treatment of injuries he suffered in a sledding accident.
The youngster was sliding down Pottery hill on north Fifth street shortly before 9 p.m. when his sled struck a bench in Haskell park. He suffered severe abdominal injuries as well as facial cuts and bruises.
Rushed to the hospital by ambulance, he underwent an emergency operation last night.

James William West, 12, injured two weeks ago today in a sledding accident in Haskell park, died early this morning at Mercy hospital where he had been taken for treatment The youngster suffered abdominal injuries when he was coasting down Pottery Hill and his sled struck a park bench.
The youngster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Averil West, 217 Haskell street, was considered in critical condition at first. However, he had been improving steadily, if slowly and his death was sudden.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Wilder and Bruce Funeral home. Dr. James J. Davies, pastor of the First Methodist church, will conduct the rites.
James West was born June 25, 1937 at Iowa City. He attended the Wahkonsa grade school here and was a member of the 6-A class at the time of the sledding accident.
Surviving him beside his parents are three sisters, Nancy, Mary Ann, and Karen West, and three brothers, Ronald, Charles and Dennis West, all at home. A number of uncles and aunts also survive, as do his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James West of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Campbell, Mrs. Campbell died 23 years ago and Mr. Campbell four years ago.
Jimmy was a member of the Y.M.C.A. and was very active in both indoor and outdoor sports.
