Gertie was born and raised in Carroll County, Georgia. She lived all her life in Carroll County. She was the daughter of Samuel B. Duncan and Frances Permelia Styles/Duncan.

Gertie was the Great Great Grand niece of Laodicea "Dicey" Langston/Springfield, the great Revolutionary War Heroine. Dicey's sister, Selah, was Gertie's Great Great Grandmother.

Gertie married Charley Eugene Stallings on May 27, 1900 in Carroll County, Georgia. He was the son of Nathan Vinson Stallings and Sarah Ann Cochran/Sykes/Stallings. Gertie and Charley had 8 children. Their son, Samuel Nathan Stallings, lived only 5 days. Their daughter, Sarah, died at only 24 years old, from strept throat. Their other children reached adulthood.

Gertie had rheumatoid arthritis and she suffered greatly from it's effects. She was bedridden for more than 12 years and finally died from it. She became very thin and her body was fairly stiff and rigid. Her hands became clinched and had to be pried open to trim her nails to keep them from growing into her palms. She was a gentle and sweet woman.

Gertie was my grandmother. Even though she has been gone for more 70 years, I still miss her greatly.
