Samuel Ernest Wiegert was born the youngest of 10 children to Christ and Maria Wiegert in Lincoln county, Kansas. He was baptized and later confirmed, in 1898, in the St. John Lutheran Church south of Lincoln, Kansas. On 21 April 1907 he married Helena Leive at St. John of Lincoln; it was a double wedding with his sister, Anna. Sam and Lena lived for a few years in Lincoln county, and then purchased a farm in Osborne county, Kansas. However, the opportunity arose to swap farms and thus they moved to Jefferson county, Nebraska, near the small (and now extinct) town of Helvey. Three children were born to them: Pauline, who married David Meyer; Eleonore who married Ernest Fredrick William Marschman; and Christoph "Chris" who married Viola Meyer. Sam's son Chris took over the farm when Sam and Lena moved to Fairbury; it is still in the family under the ownership of Chris's granddaughter.
