One of Centerville's pioneer settlers, Elmer Mattson, 69, died at The Dalles hospital Feb. 4 following a brief illness.
A member of the original colony of Finnish settlers who came to Klickitat county on July 10, 1877, Mr. Mattson had lived in Centerville for 65 years. He came to Centerville with his parents at the age of 5 from Calumet, Mich. He was born in Finland and came to America as a baby.
For the past 25 years he has farmed the original Mattson ranch located just west of Centerville. He was active up to a few days prior to his death and did all his own farm work.
Survivors include the widow, Maggie, of Centerville; one daughter, Mrs. E.K. Guinan; one son, Ernest Mattson; two granddaughters, Judith and Stephanie Mattson, all of GOldendale; four brothers, John, August, Frank and Arthur Mattson, and two sisters, Mrs. Matt Crocker and Mrs. Mathilda Ahola of Centerville. Mrs. Ahola is a twin sister of Mr. Mattson.
Mr. Mattson passed away on his forty-eighth wedding anniversary. he had been a lifelong member of the Lutheran church and was affiliated with the Modern Woodman of America.
Funeral services for Mr. Mattson were conducted by the Rev. P. Glenn Garner, pastor of the Goldendale Baptist church
