AUGUST MATTSON PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES TUESDAY

August Mattson, one of the earliest residents of the Centerville area, passed away suddenly at his home in Portland Tuesday. Mattson was born in Centerville about 73 years ago and made his home there until a few years ago when he and his wife moved to Portland, Oregon

At press time no date of funeral had been set. The remains were brought to Goldendale and services will be held from the Phillips Funeral Home.

He is survived by his widow, Anna; two daughters, Mrs. Estella Feltz of Portland and Mrs. Hugh Cameron of Centerville.

OBITUARY

August Leonard Mattson was born in Centerville, October 28, 1877. He was the son of Lars and Annie Mattson, pioneer couple who with five other families came here in July of that year, and filed on homesteads and settled in the Centerville area.

On May 10, 1901 he was united in marriage to Anna Hendrickson. Besides his wife, two daughters survive, Estella Feltz and Alma Cameron. Also two grandsons, Bruce and Dale Cameron, two brothers, Frank and Arthur Mattson, and one sister, Matilda Ahola, all of Centerville, and numerous nephews and nieces survive.

He farmed near Centerville until 1941 when they moved to Goldendale where they resided for six years. For the past five years they have made their home in Portland where he passed away at his home following a cerebral hemorrhage April 15, 1952, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 16 days.

He was a kind and devoted husband and father, and was especially a friend of children everywhere he lived. He was always ready to help anyone in need, and his many acts of kindness will be long remembered by his host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Phillips Funeral Home Friday, April 16, with Rev. Carl Sacrisen of Portland officiating. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Goldendale.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Zenas Mattson, Albine Wiidanen, Ernest Mattson, Wilburt Crocker, Otis Mattson and Clarence Mattson.
