VARNA - Warren J. Crew, 76, of Varna, died Saturday morning, Nov. 26, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon with the Rev. Betty Delgado officiating. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery No. 2 in rural Varna. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Mr. Crew was born July 20, 1929, in Varna, to John and Hazel (Jenkins) Crew. He married Nellie Besinger on May 31, 1952, in Varna.
He was a former chief of police in Lacon, a Varna police officer and Chillicothe auxiliary police officer. He served 16 years as an officer with Illinois Secretary of State Police. He also owned and operated Warren's Lock and Key Service in Varna for 16 years, retiring in 2004.
He was a paratrooper in the Army, serving with the 11th Airborne and later was an A/1c with the Air Force, serving in Korea. He was a member of Edward Lundgren American Legion Post 892 in Varna and Varna United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Randy (Lori) of Oglesby; four sisters, Ella Teagarden and Dorothy Grubb, both of Streator, Phyllis Clearwater of Tonica and Helen Bridgeforth of Rutland; a brother, Walter of La Salle; five grandchildren, Shane, Amanda, Sarah and Mandi Crew and Stacy Schott; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert; six brothers, Jim, Frank, Russ, Glen, Clifford and LaVerne; and two sisters, Elizabeth Forbes and Rosie Crank.
