Elizabeth Jean Slavin was nicknamed Beth or Sis often abbreviated to Si, Sy or Cy. Beth was named for her grandmother Eliza Hackett Hughes who had Americanized her name to Elizabeth. Beth, known as Betty as a child, was the middle child of the five children of Tully Slavin and his second wife Jennie Hughes. She was their only daughter although she always thought of her half-sister Jessie as her sister. Although two of her brothers were older, Beth was a staunch defender of all her brothers while they were growing up in Yonkers, NY.
On June 16, 1933 with the help of her maternal cousin Nina Moore Baxter and Nina's husband Wendell, Beth eloped with Roger Stone Babcock. They were married in Sayreville, PA. Roger graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy and worked for Union Carbide. They lived in NJ and PA during their married life where they raised their three children and helped raise their daughter's children.
