Char worked for the NY Central Railroad. A consummate organization man, Char received a critical skills deferment during WWII due to his position with the NY Central Railroad. During the war years, he was the Trainmaster in Buffalo, NY eventually moving up the ranks to an executive position as the Director of the Freight Division at the NY Central RR headquarters first in Manhattan and then in Philadelphia. Char retired from the railroad and went on to work for the Georgia Pacific Paper Company.
Char married Mary Theresa Salvani on August 1, 1938; they had two daughters. Char and Mary raised their daughters in CT during the years he worked in Manhattan.
