Jessie Marie Slavin Donnelly also known as Jess was born in Sawkill, NY to Jennie Hughes. Jennie refused to tell anyone who Jess’s father was although as Jess grew older she resembled a Kingston politician. Raised by her mother in Kingston until Jennie married Tully Slavin in 1903, Jess then took Tully’s last name and was brought up in the extended family.

Jess graduated from Yonkers PS 3, Yonkers High School and Yonkers Teacher Training School. She was appointed as a teacher at Yonkers PS 5 in 1917, a position she would hold for 5 years. She worked at various New York City schools over the next 39 years. At the time of her death in 1957, she was the acting Assistant Principal at PS 172 in Manhattan. She received a BA and MA from New York University.

Jess married John Murray Donnelly (b. 1896) on July 1, 1922 at St. Mary’s Church in Yonkers; they set up a household in Manhattan. Eventually they relocated to St. Albans, Queens, NY and purchased a home. Her mother Jennie and her brothers Art and Albert would live with her in St. Albans.

Murray had served in WWI and was in the reserves at the outbreak of WWII. Recalled to duty in 1941, he was a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel when he was killed in action in 1943. Jess and Murray did not have any children; although Jessie was a godmother for several of her nieces. She lived with her brother Al in Yorktown Heights NY from 1952 until the year prior to her death from cancer on April 5, 1957.
