Arthur John Slavin was nicknamed A or Art was the oldest son of Tully Slavin and his second wife Jennie. Art was born and raised in Yonkers, NY attended PS 19 and graduated from Yonkers High School. His middle name was from his maternal grandfather John Hughes.

Art resembled his father Tully and like Tully needed glasses for his vision. He worked for the Central Hanover Bank and Trust, Bank of Commerce and the Royal Bank of Canada on Wall Street prior to being inducted into the U.S. Army in September 1942.

Art served in the 326 AAF Air Base Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force initially in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and then in Blytheville, Arkansas working as a radio technician in air traffic control and attaining the rank of Private First Class. After 15 months of service, Art received a medical discharge in 1943 when a severe heart condition was found in routine flight physical shortly after the death of his mother in August 1943. He returned home in early 1944 and was a junior executive at the Bank of Manhattan when he died on November 4, 1945 from heart disease.

At the time of his death he was living with his sister Jess Donnelly in St. Albans, Queens. Art never married.
