James Albert Slavin (b. May 31, 1916) used his middle name of Albert. He was nicknamed Al or Schmeckenheimer usually shortened to Schmeck, Schmecky or Heim. The nickname is believed to come from a popular comic strip. Al was the youngest child of Tully Slavin and his second wife Jennie Hughes and treated as a son by his older sister Jess and her husband Murray Donnelly.

Born in Yonkers, NY, Al was living with his parents when they moved to the Bronx in 1930. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx in 1936 a year after his father died. Al followed his brothers Ben and Char to the NY Central Railroad for work.

Single and eligible for the draft, Al enlisted in the NY Central Railroad sponsored 721st Railway Operating Battalion of the U.S. Army. He was based in Parbaripu, India for the duration of the war. After the war Al returned to his position with the NY Central Railroad.

Al was on assignment in Buffalo, NY when he met and married Irene B. Machowski on August 9, 1947. They were the parents of three children.

Al was a lifelong employee of the New York Central Railroad. He worked at the headquarters in Manhattan until it was moved to Philadelphia. Then he transferred to the office in the Croton Harmon location. He died in Phelps Memorial Hospital two weeks after he suffered a stroke.
