Born in Yonkers, NY, Al was living with his parents when they moved to the Bronx in 1930. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx in 1936 a year after his father died. Al followed his brothers Ben and Char to the NY Central Railroad for work.
Single and eligible for the draft, Al enlisted in the NY Central Railroad sponsored 721st Railway Operating Battalion of the U.S. Army. He was based in Parbaripu, India for the duration of the war. After the war Al returned to his position with the NY Central Railroad.
Al was on assignment in Buffalo, NY when he met and married Irene B. Machowski on August 9, 1947. They were the parents of three children.
Al was a lifelong employee of the New York Central Railroad. He worked at the headquarters in Manhattan until it was moved to Philadelphia. Then he transferred to the office in the Croton Harmon location. He died in Phelps Memorial Hospital two weeks after he suffered a stroke.
