Funeral services for George William Owens,57,a native of Dallas who had been in the lumber business all his adult life, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Geo. A Brewer Funeral Chapel, 303 ross. He died early Wednesday.
Owens,who lived at 4016 Northwest Highway, was the former president of George W. Owens Lumber Company and the George W. Owens Wholesale and Builders Supply Company, Inc.
while attending hight shool he worked in his father's lumber company. His father was the late G W Owens. Sr. When the younger Owens was eighteen he took over the family lumber business in Grand Prairie. He became a full partner of the firm when he married in 1916. The elder Owens was by the operating twenty-seven lumber yards.
Owens went into semi retirement in 1941, but began actively operating the business again with the formation of the Wholesale Lumber and the Builders Supply, Inc. in 1951.
Besides the lumber business, Owens was instrumental in the building of many new homes in Dallas. He developed Kessler Park and the Owenwood section and was a pioneer in the mass production of a thousand houses in West Oak Cliff in 1928.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church, a thirty-second degree Mason, and a member of the Hella Temple Shrine. Hew was also a past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs Pauline Hollingsworth Owens, daughter Miss Dorothy Owens and Miss Peggy Owens, of Dallas, and Mrs. Wayne JAcobson of Hill City, Wis., a son,Robert T Owens of Dalls,a sister, Mrs. Lawrence Diamond, of Dallas, and one grand son.
