George enlisted 31 December 1941 World War II According to "WWII Conflict Veterans Intered Oversees" he died 4 Mar 1943 - the Netherlands

He was in 368 Bomber Squadron 306th Bomber. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal and additional airmedals.

"TWO DALLAS AIRMEN MISSING AFTER ACTION OVER EUROPE
Two Dallas flying officers are missing after action over Europe, the War Department has informed their families.
They are Lieut George W Owens Jr, 22, a Dallas lad who joined the Air Force a few hours after word fourteen months ago that his boyhood chum had been killed in action, and Lieutenant William H. Hylton, 26.

Owens is the son of Mr and Mrs George W Owens, 3503 Crescent, and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Hylton also is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson and is the son of Mrs J M Campbell, 4661 Southern. His wife, Mrs Lydia Fountain Hylton, lives at Orange. He is the brother of Mrs Russell H Reed and the grandson of Gilbert H Irish, both of Dallas.

Both officers have been missing since March 4. On tht date American Flying Fortresses jarred the roots of Hamm, key of the vast German rail network, and Rotterdam, in a terrific pounding of the Nazi's most important wartime communication centers.

Five Fortresses failed to return from the mission. Lieutenant Owens was a flight navigator and had been in England since September, 1942.

He was graduated from Mather Field, California., on July 4, 1942, after having started training in January.

Four Dallas men of the Army Eighth Air Force were included in a recapitulation of more than 1,700 awards for valor and exceptionally meritorious service made to officers and
men of the group during their seven-month offensive on Europe from bases in England, Associated Press dispatches reported Monday.

.......The four Dalals men who have received the Air Medal are Lieut Olan L Hubbard 2639 Emmett, who recently set a record of having dropped the heaviet weight of bombs on the Nazis of any single American bombardier; Second Lieut George W. Owens, Jr, 3503 Crescent, later reported missing in action.......

Lieutenant Owens, 22, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High school, went to England last September and was reported missing March 4. He was graduated from Mather Field, California, July 4, 1942.
