GARNETT - Services for Zona Ellen Smith, 86, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Farris-Feuerborn Funeral Home, Garnett. Burial will be at Garnett Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, June 18, 1996, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
She was born July 13, 1909, in Bourbon County, the daughter of Ebenezer Slocum and LuDell Swisher Dart.
Mrs. Smith grew up in Anderson County and graduated in 1928 from Garnett High School, where she played violin in the orchestra. She and her husband moved in 1952 to Lawrence, where she attended Kansas University and worked in the William Allen White School of Journalism as administrative assistant to the dean until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Lawrence, the Douglas County Genealogy Society and Daughters of the American Revolution. She married Claude Edson Smith on Feb. 18, 1934, in Liberty, Mo. He died in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Gregory Hyland Smith, Lawrence, and Bradford Slocum Smith, South Lake Tahoe, Nev.; a daughter, Claudette Martin, Houston; four sisters' Mary Maxey, Vivian Haynes and Blanche Brady, all of Garnett; and Bernadine Tinsley, Wellsville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
