Claude Edson Smith, 89 of Lawrence, died at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence on Monday, December 20,1993. He was born on November 9, 1904, at Atchison, the son of Frank Hyland and Nellie Mae Hodge Smith. The Frank Smith family moved to Garnett in 1914, when Frank opened the Smith & Sons Plumbing and Heating Business. The Frank Smith & Sons Plumbing & Heating Company installed the first electricity in Anderson County, particularly in the Harris area. Claude, his brother Bob, and sister, Mable, all attended Garnett schools. On February 18, 1934, Claude married Zona Ellen Dart in Liberty, MO. During World War 11 Claude and Zona moved to Bremerton, WA, where he worked in the ship yards. After the war Claude moved his family back to Garnett and started the Smith Plumbing & Heating Company. In 1952, the family moved to Lawrence where Claude was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union #2. He retired in 1972. In November, the Odd Fellow Lodge honored Mr. Smith for his 65 years of membership. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Lawrence and the Douglas County Genealogical Society. He is survived by his wife, Zona of Lawrence; two sons, Gregory Hyland Smith of Lawrence; and Bradford Slocum Smith of Vancouver, BC; and a daughter, Claudette Elaine Smith Martin of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 1993, at Farris-Feuerbom Memorial Chapel. Rev. Gary Benjamin officiated. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist and David Hackathorn, soloist. Casketbearers were "Grandsons, Jeffery Martin, Michael Martin, Brian Smith and Stephen Craven. Honorary casketbearers were the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Interment followed in the Garnett Cemetery.
