Obituary from The Anderson Countian, Garnett, Kansas

ADAM J. "JACK" DART
Adam J. "Jack" Dart, 83, Ottawa, whose death was Sunday, Sept. 9 at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, was the last male member of one of Anderson County's oldest pioneer families. Jerusha and Gilbert Dart obtained a military grant for 80 acres of land near Greeley in 1854. In 1856, the Dart family, four sons and three daughters settled at Mt. Gilead, now the City of Greeley. By 1861, the family had acquired a total of 720 acres of forest and pasture land. Gilbert Dart, the father died soon after arrival in Kansas.
In 1859, Lester Dart drowned while crossing the Pottawatomie River while on his way to cast his vote for a Free Kansas. Henry Dart was a member of the Ilth Kansas Calvalry. Two more sons of Jerusha and Gilbert Dart were drowned in the Pottawatomie including Gilbert Jr., who drowned in 1872. The famine and invasion of grasshoppers added to the family's tragedies and they soon disposed of their holdings to seek land elsewhere. Jack Dart was born in Kincaid. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ottawa and the Ottawa Senior Citizens Club.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Dengel Mortuary, Ottawa. Conducting the service was Rev. William Weber of Calvary Baptist Church. "It Is No Secret" and "Just A Closer Walk" were sung by vocalist Teddy Rood who was accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Mathews, organist. Interment was in Garnett cemetery. Casket bearers were nephews, Garland Haynes, Gregg Smith, C.L. Koontz, Vernon Maxey, Edward Maxey, Warren Lilly, James Tinsley and Stanley Maxey. Honorary casket bearers were C.C. Barnes, Albert Unruh, Cecil Sedoris, S.S. Bergsrna and Lester Hoffman.
