Lloyd J. Carney, 61, a machine operator at Massena Works, Alcoa, was found dead at 3:53 Monday afternoon, Feb. 8, 1960, at his home at 18 Haskell Street.
He had been on sick leave at the plant for the past month.
When the children came home from school, they found a note directing them to call their mother at the Red Cross office. She called the police. He had used a 22-bolt action rifle to end his life.
Mr. Carney was born in Brasher, Aug. 21, 1898, a son of Orville and Minnie Prashaw Carney. He attended area schools and married Miss Blanche Quenelle, Massena, Sept. 14, 1929. His continuous service at the aluminum plant began Oct. 29, 1929.
He was a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Alice) Cline, Massena, Mrs. Charles (Judy) Dunn, Columbus, Ohio, and Pamela, a senior in high school; two sons, Ronald and Timothy, both in high school; for grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Charles, Downer and Claude Carney, Massena; seven sisters, Mrs. Eveyln Pringle, Mrs. Vera Bennett, Mrs. Sarah Brainard, Mrs. Leo (Margaret) Brainard, and Mrs. William (Mabel) Dowe, all of Massena, Mrs. Benjamin (May) Ploof, Lake Clear, Mrs. Christopher (Mildred) Clark, Black River; and many nieces and nephews.
The body is remaining at the Phillips Memorial Home.
