Funeral Services for Claude Carney, 59, Held This Morning
Funeral services for Claude J. Carney, 59, of 2 Isabel St., a retired Alcoan, were held this morning at 10 o'clock in Sacred; Heart Church and the body, was placed in the vault in Pine Grove Cemetery to await burial in the family plot.
The body was at the Reagan Funeral Chapel.
He was dead upon arrival at Massena Memorial Hospital at 4:15 o'clock Sunday morning, Jan. 30, 1972, following a one-car accident on the S. Racket River Rd., inside the village, at 3: 55 o'clock.
Critically injured was Charles LaValley, 21, Shorts Trailer Court, who was driving the Carney vehicle, according to the police investigation.
Mr. Carney died of compound fracture of the skull, broken neck, internal hemorrhaging.
Mr. LaValley is suffering from multiple fractures and shock.
The 1966 two-door sedan was westbound on the South Racket River Rd., west of Premo's Sales and Service Shop, and went off the right side of the highway and hit a tree.
Both men were pinned inside the wrecked car. The Massena Rescue Squad ambulance and truck and the Collins tow truck were at the scene. The car had to be pried apart before the two men could be released.
Dr. Sami Daye declared Carney dead at the hospital.
Investigating are village police and David E. Donaldson, Massena, St. Lawrence County coroner. The investigation is continuing.
Mr. Carney, was born in Massena July 8, 1912, a son of Orville and Mary Prashaw Carney. He attended local schools and began working at Massena
Operations, Alcoa, at an early age. He had taken early retirement. He never married.
Surviving are six sisters. Mrs. William (Mabel) Dowe, Waterloo, Mrs. William (Sarah) Brainard, Mrs. Ben (Mae) Ploof and Mrs. Leo (Margaret) Donovan, all of Massena, Mrs. Frederick (Evelyn) Pringle, Vallejo, Calif., and Mrs. Christopher (Mildred) Clark, Black River; two brothers, Charles and Downer Carney, both of Massena and a number of nephews and nieces.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club.
The league of the Sacred Heart recited the Rosary at the Reagan Funeral Chapel at 8:15 o'clock Monday night.
