James Elmer Grubaugh was born on 27 Sep 1884 in Loudonville, Ashland, OH to John Ramsey Grubaugh and Emma Jane Russell. He was the 4th of 10 children born to his parents. He married Florence Edith Smith on 4 Sep 1904 in Perrysville, Ashland, OH. They had 5 children -
Esther Leone Grubaugh (1905-1913), Kenneth Otto Grubaugh (1907-1992), Catherine Elizabeth Grubaugh Gowan Lantz (1909-1990), Russell Louis Grubaugh (1912-1994) and Donald Wilburt Grubaugh (1916-1989).

James gives different birth years in his World War I draft registration (1883) and his World War II draft registration (1882).

James spent much of his life working in the rubber and tire industry in Akron. In 1917, he lists Star Rubber Company as her employer and in 1942, he lists Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as his employer.

Florence died in late Feb 1946 of a brain tumor. Losing Florence took a significant toll on James. Per his death certificate, he died by hanging on 10 May 1946, just two and a half months after losing Florence.
