ETHEL A. PIERCE

Ethel Avis (Elliott) Pierce was born March 6, 1920 in Olmitz, Iowa to Robert Nisley and Fern Elizabeth (Rohrer) Elliott. She passed away Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Abington Nursing Home in Ames, Iowa at the age of 88 years. She had been a resident since March of 2002. Prior to living there, she had resided in the Chariton area for many years.

Ethel grew up on a farm northeast of Chariton where she lived with her parents and siblings. She attended country school through the eighth grade. In 1971, she earned her High School GED.

Ethel was united in marriage to Everett Pierce December 25, 1937. To this union were born four sons, Donald, Gary, Jerry and Rickie. Everett and Ethel lived on acreage outside of Russell, Iowa before moving to the Chariton area in 1940.

After the war, they moved to Bedford, Iowa, then to Lenox, and finally to Osceola, where Ethel ran a restaurant. Her restaurant was called Ethel's Café. She ran the business for several years in the 1950's and early 1960's. Later, she and her husband moved back to Chariton, Iowa where they built an A-Frame home.

Ethel had many interests. Some of the activities she enjoyed were cooking, sewing and quilting. She loved spending time with her husband, going places in their motor home and camping. She and Everett would often enjoy a good card game and spending time gardening.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; her sons, Gary and Rickie Pierce; her daughter-in-law, Kay Pierce; her sisters, Daisie Whitson and Mary Ann Gold; her brother, Robert Elliott; and her brothers-in-law, Duane Beadle, Leland Sims, Dean (Twig) Whitson and Earl Raffety.

She is survived by her sons, Donald (Peggy) Pierce of Santa Clara, UT and Jerry Pierce of Ames, IA; her daughter-in-law, Linda Pierce of Coralville, IA; her sisters, Thelma Raffety, Beulah Beadle, Helen Sims, Beverly (Clyde) Buckalew and Myrtle (Bob) Hamilton; her brother, Raymond (Mary) Elliott; her brother-in-law, Bill Gold; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor C. J. Latham officiating. Interment was held in the Chariton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jack James, David Beaty and Larry Michael. Honorary bearers include Jerry Pierce, Donald Pierce, Raymond Elliott and Mitchell Ronfeldt.
