Fred Brooks, 79, of Hendersonville, went peacefully to his heavenly home Friday, Dec 4, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late David and Gertie Brooks, and was also preceded in death by sisters, Selma Watson, Olive Hall, Sylvia Finley, Juanita Fletcher, and a brother, Tom Brooks.
He was born and raised in Madison County. He was an Army veteran, hoding the rank of corporal.
He moved to Hendersonville, where he was one of the first employees of General Electric Co, retiring in 1992. He was past commander of VFW Post No. 5206, and was a member of AMVETS. He loved his country and few his flag proudly. He was an avid reader, with a special interest in history. He followed the Red Sox, and thought Ted Williams was the greatest player who ever played. He loved wildlife, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jewel Corn Brooks; a daughter, Joy Brooks; a son, Steven Brooks and his wife, Linda Purvis Brooks, all of Hendersonville. He was the loving grandfather to Justin, Christian, Kelsey and Alexis Brooks, all of Hendersonville; three sisters, Jean Dunlap and Nina Lee Brooks, both of Greenville, SC, and Mary B Sams of Hendersonville; brothers, Lionel Brooks of Hot Springs, Rex Brooks of Newport, Tenn., and a number of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 pm Monday in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary. The Rev Travis Harrison will officiate.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 pm prior to the service in the chapel, and at other times will be at the home of Joy Brooks. Military honors will be provided by Hubert M Smith American Legion Post No 77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post No 5206, and DAV Chapter 14.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Balfour Baptist Church, 2502 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville, NC 28791; or Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731. Guests may sign a register book at www.forestlawnhendersonville.com.
