Martin Perkinson Dies; Funeral Held St. Lawrence Monday
Funeral services for Martin K. Perkinson, 88, of Milbank, were held Monday in St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Paul McHarness officiating at the rites. Mr. Perkinson died Thursday at Whetstone Valley Nursing Home following a long illness.
Born Dec. 18, 1893, at Inwood, Iowa, he was the son of James and Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Perkinson. He received his schooling in Larchwood, Iowa. Prior to entering the US Army on May 12, 1917, he had worked as a day laborer. Mr. Perkinson served in World War I in France from August to November in 1918. He received his discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa, on Aug. 6, 1919. Afterwards he went to Roberts County and farmed for John Thyne and Harvey Leavitt. He also worked for the International Harvester for several years.
Following his marriage to Paula Helm at Webster, Feb. 15, 1934, the couple moved to Appleton, Minn. Mr. Perkinson trained horses for Dr. William Kaufman until 1956. Afterwards they moved to California for the winters and owned and trained horses and spent the summers in Chicago, Ill. After retiring in 1976, the Perkinsons moved to Milbank.
Mr. Perkinson was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Russell Johnson Post No. 72 of the American Legion for 47 years. Survivors include his wife, Paula, and nieces and nephews.
The pallbearers were William Unker, Thomas Peschong, Kenneth McFarland, Jr., Garry and Larry Trapp and Jim Jurgens. Interment was in the Milbank Cemetery. The Mundwiler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A rosary and scripture service was held Sunday evening in the Mundwiler Funeral Chapel. (Grant County Review, Milbank, SD, Aug. 11, 1982)
