Gideon Barthel Dead
Gideon Barthel, who was 98 years old and had lived in Emporia since he was 11 years old, died Friday afternoon in Newman Memorial County Hospital.
He had moved not long ago from his home at 125 South Commercial St., to the Meadows Nursing Home, and had been a hospital patient for the past three weeks.
Funeral services will be at 10 a. m. Monday in the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church, with burial in Maplewood Cemetery. The McVey-Blair Colonial Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Barthel was a carpenter and general contractor before his retirement. The son of John Frederick and Marie Ehgoetz Barthel, he was born May llth, 1866, in Sebringville, Ont., Canada, and he was married to Lydia Isenhower Dec. 10th, 1891, in Denison, Tex. He was a member of the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife who died Aug. 28th, 1961, and by one daughter, Ursula.
He is survived by one son, Daniel Barthel, Hannibal, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Russell Vickers, Neodesha, and Mrs. E. Ruth Kitzenberger, St. Joseph, Mo.; two brothers, Dr. B. Barthel, Denver, Colo., and the Rev. George Barthel, Kitchener, Ont., Can.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
