Emporian's Brother Loses Eye in Car Crash - Another Brother Dies
Rev. Benjamin Barthel, Denver, a brother of Samuel Barthel, who died Wednesday in Topeka, and also a brother of G. Barthel, 126 South Commercial, is in a Hutchinson hospital today for serious injuries suffered when his motor car struck a culvert west of Hutchinson Wednesday night.
The sight of one eye was destroyed and Mr. Barthel was cut severely about the face and head. Mrs. Barthel who was driving escaped with minor injuries. They were enroute home from Enid, Okla., when the accident occurred. They left Emporia for Enid Tuesday afternoon. They had been visiting G. Barthel and other relatives and friends here. Benjamin Barthel did not know of the death of his brother, Samuel, when he left.

Samuel Barthel Dead.
Samuel Barthel, 57, formerly of Emporia, died at 2 o'clock this morning in a Topeka hospital. The body will be brought to Emporia for the funeral services and interment, but further arrangements have not been made.
Samuel Barthel was born February 16, 1875, in Blythe, Canada. He came to Emporia in 1877 with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Barthel. In 1892 he went to New York, and was married there in 1898. Later he returned to Emporia, living here from 1905 to 1915, and then moving to Topeka.
Mr. Barthel is survived by one daughter, Miss Lusetta Ursula Barthel, and four sons, Harold, John, Clyde and Floyd Barthel, all of Topeka; two grandchildren; three sister, Mrs. Minnie Emmel and Mrs. Sam Bamesberger, of Emporia, and Mrs. John Bamesberger, of Americus, and five brothers, Gideon Barthel, of Emporia; Henry F. Barthel, who lives in Texas; Edward Barthel. of Atchison; Rev. Benjamin Barthel. of Denver, and Rev. George Barthel, of Kitchener, Ont.

Funeral services for Samuel Barthel, of Topeka, who died Wednesday morning in a Topeka hospital, will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Evangelical church. Rev. B.E. Reams, pastor of the church, will conduct the services, and interment will be in Maplewood cemetery.

The Barthel Funeral.
Funeral services for Sam Barthel, former Emporian, who died Wednesday at his home in Topeka, were held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Evangelical church. Rev. B.E. Reams, pastor of the church, conducted the services. The mixed quartet of the Evangelical church sang. Interment as in Maplewood cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Bamesberger, Harry Bamesberger, Dan Barthel, Arthur Morgan, Harold Kitzenberger and Russell Vickers.
Among the out-of-town relatives in Emporia for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Barthel, Mr. and Mrs. John Barthel and three of the five surviving children of Sam Barthel, Clyde, Floyd and Lusetta Barthel, all of Topeka.
