The last day of the old year brought sadness to many hearts in this community, when it was learned that Alpha Miller died Sunday morning at 7:15 in his home on East Harrison street, of an acute heart attack.

He was born in Union township, April 12, 1873 on the old Miller homestead and died Sunday, Dec 31, 1933, aged 60 years, 8 months and 19 days. He was the son of David and Susan Miller, who preceded him in death.

He was united in marriage to Clara Penrose July 7, 1896, and moved to Wakarusa 27 years ago.

Surviving are the widow, three children, Mrs Lowell Fredericks of Bremen, Charles and Verna at home; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs Mary Miller, and seven brothers, Joseph of Long Beach, Calif; Josiah Miller of West Goshen, Daniel Miller of Camden, Ind, Jacob William, Leander and David Miller all of near Wakarusa. He was a member of the Old German Baptist church.

He was born of parents whose sincerity, virtue and integrity were unquestionable. The high ideals which were instilled into the lives of their children bore fruit. And we can truthfully say that this community is better by Alpha Miller having lived in it. He was very devoted to his home and family. His greatest pleasure was found in pleasing his wife, children and grandchildren.

He stood four square with the world. He was free to express his honest convictions on moral questions regardless of what the other fellow had to say. At one time he was a member of the town council, and always gave his influence for the right as he saw it. He was respected by his neighbors and loved by his friends. The entire community suffers a loss in his demise and would mingle their grief and sympathy with that of the sorrowing family.

Scores of friends gathered Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church to pay their respects to one they loved. The Rev O A Custer of North Manchester, delivered the sermon and the pastor of the church, Rev John M Hartman, assisted with the ceremonies.

It was the final farewell to a man who had entwined himself by his gracious personality into the friendship of everyone – whose quiet greeting to all he met or passed, brought them at the moment of his committal to another and better world, to a place beside the bier of one they were glad to call "friend."

Burial in Olive cemetery.
