Gaul, 22, of Verndale, Minnesota wounded by shrapnel from a German 88mm shell in the right arm and left shoulder at Aachen is convalescing at this United States Army General Hospital in England. He has been awarded the Purple Heart.

His ward surgeon Lt Joseph F. Wright of Cincinnati, Ohio said, "Pfc Gaul has made a good recovery and after a period of reconditioning he will be ready for duty"

"My division was on the left flank of one of the divisions which were closing in on Aachen" Pfc Gaul said. "The Jerries started sending over their artillery shells but for every shell we received we sent 10 back in return. When a shell exploded in the trees over my foxhole, some of the shrapnel hit me".

In less than a minute the medics were at his side offering first aid. After a few days in a field hospital in Belgium, he was then flown by transport plane to this general hospital in England.
