Mrs. Elsiena J. Bos, 92, formerly of Hartley, died Friday, April 15, 2011, at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Elsiena Jeanetta was born to Jacobus and Gertrude (Bonnes) Hofland. She was raised on the family farm northeast of Orange City.
On Feb. 27, 1939, she married Henry Bos, Jr., at Orange City. They farmed at Hawarden, Maurice, and Struble. In 1962, they purchased a farm near Hartley. In 1982, they retired, and continued living on the farm. Henry died May 10, 1997, after more than 58 years of marriage.
In 2001, Elsiena moved to Morningside Estates in Hartley. She entered Hartley Health Center in May 2009. In September 2010, she moved into Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls, S.D., to be near family, where she passed away.
Elsiena was a member of the Melvin Reformed Church.
Elsiena enjoyed being a homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and is remembered for her homemade bread and pies. She loved gardening, raising flowers and helping her husband on the farm.
One of the main goals of her life was to teach her children to love and trust God, and to follow Him all of their days. Her children built their lives on this firm foundation of faith.
Survivors include her two daughters, Gloria Haarsma, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Janet (Duane) Hasche, of Okoboji; six grandchildren, Lesa (Butch) Thompson, Kelly (Miriam) Haarsma, Michelle (Jim) Geraets, Robin (Layne) Ibel, Amber (Peter) Widman, and Steven Bos; 13 great-grandchildren, Dustin, Nicole, Luke, Michael, Emily, Hannah, Ashley, Nick, McKenzie, Gabriella, Peter Jr., Henry, and Auralia, plus a 14th due momentarily; two great-great-grandchildren, Zakary and Jaylyn; and a brother, Elmer Hofland, of Orange City.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Henry Jay III and Darwin Dale; a son-in-law, Peter Haarsma; a grandson, David Henry Bos; a great-grandson, Craig; three brothers, John, Joe C., and James Hofland; and four sisters, Angeline Horstman, Catherine Schuiteman, Gertrude Jacobs, and Henrietta Mars.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. today (Monday) at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Alvin Honken officiating. Interment followed at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family present was the hour before the service Monday at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
