James Hofland, 82, passed away Friday, Dec. 28 at his home in Orange City, after suffering an illness for 3 years caused by a paralytic stroke.

Born in Holland, The Netherlands, July 12, 1874 he came to America with his parents, at the age of 15 settling on a farm 3 miles north and 1½ mile east of Orange City.

Mr. Hofland continued on the farm after his marriage to Gertrude Bonnes in 1903 until retirement 10 years ago.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hofland who survive with their mother. They are: John Hofland of Sanborn; Angeline, Mrs. Gt. Horstman of Sanborn; Kathryn, Mrs. Art Schuiteman of Sioux Center; Joe Hofland of Alton; Gertrude, Mrs. John Hartog of O.C.; Henrietta, Mrs. Jake Mars of O.C.; Elsina, Mrs. Henry Bos of Ireton ; James Hofland of O.C., and Elmer Hofland of Sioux Center. There are 50 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

One sister, Mrs. John Peters resides at Hospers.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Christian Ref. church with Rev. Aldrich Dusseljee officiating. The Van Etten Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements and interment was mad in the O.C. cemetery.
