LOUISE BRIGGS

Louise Marilyn Montgomery Briggs was born June 7, 1917 to Casey and Lura Apgar Montgomery, on her parent's farm north of Chariton on Hwy. 14.

She was the eldest of four children, all of whom have preceded her in death, Leone Frank, Elzene Hutchings and Bill Montgomery.

She married Roy Monroe Briggs March 31, 1934 in Chariton and to this union nine children were born.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Marilyn Kay, ten months old, daughter, Jenny Maassen in 1993, husband, Roy in 1998, and daughter, Darni Mundy in 2001, and son, Gene in 2003.

Louise is survived by daughter, Retta (Eugene) Chiri, Sandy (Tub) Shriver and Carol Sue (Dave) Forst; sons, Roy (Paulette), and Larry (Lesta) and daughter-in-law, Sharon; 28 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In case you're counting that is 106 descendants.

Louise was a housewife, farmwife and tavern owner, inventing "Iowa's Largest Hamburger." Seemingly, this would have been a full time endeavor but mom was known to have a house full of family over a weekend and even to help raise some of these children.

She loved to travel and had hopes of doing more as retirement time came. They did travel with family members and we all enjoyed having them along, great card players and willing participants made these trips memorable.

After the loss of her legs, staying at home became possible due to the overwhelming help of family and friends, especially Bonnie Clark, Kay Wessel, Sheryl Smith and family friend, Terri Clark. The love and caring from her family helped to make life a little easier while being confined to bed and wheelchair.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.
