Darlene Leone Briggs Mundy Chadwick was born May 6, 1936 to Roy and Louise Briggs in a farmhouse in Lucas County, Iowa. She died April 1, 2001, in McAllen, Texas of respiratory failure.
Nicknamed "Darni" by family and friends, Darlene grew up in rural Williamson and graduated from Chariton High School in 1954.
She married James Arthur Mundy on Oct. 1, 1954. Four children were born to this union, James Brian, Edward Wayne, Sheila Kay and Vicki Jo. They resided in Des Moines, Iowa for most of their lives. Darlene worked for Fawn Engineering for 25 years. During this time her husband, James, passed away.
She married Veral Chadwick on March 25, 1988. When she retired, they moved from Des Moines to Williamson. She enjoyed music, dancing, yard work, computers, cooking, card games, writing poetry and visiting friends and relatives.
She was well known for catering plenty of homemade food to the families of hospitalized friends or relatives. She always had a joke to tell and a smile. She was known for her compassionate heart and her contagious laugh.
Darlene was preceded in death by all her grandparents, her father, two sisters, Marilyn and Jenny, and her husband, Jim.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Verall; her mother, Louise Briggs; two sons, James Mundy and wife Nancy of Chariton and Edward Mundy and wife Toni of Des Moines; two daughters, Kay and husband Jim Wessell of Chariton and Vicki and husband John Hale of Chariton.
She is also survived by three sisters, Retta and husband Eugene Chiri, Sandy and husband Jerry Shriver, Carol and husband Dave Forst, all of Williamson; three brothers, Gene Briggs and wife Sharon of Grimes, Roy Briggs and wife Paulette of Des Moines, Larry Briggs and wife Lesta of Woodward. Also seven grandsons, eight granddaughters, two great-grandson, many nieces, nephews, cousins, two aunts, Nellie Briggs and Elzene Hutchings, and many friends who will miss her.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Fielding Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis St. Lawrence officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
