BRIGGS

Roy Monroe Briggs was born Sept. 17, 1912, in rural Lucas County, Iowa, the fourth of four born To Charles Edward and Demmie Retta Wright Briggs. He passed away April 30, 1998, at the Lucas County Health Center after suffering a massive stroke at the age of 85.

After completing the eighth grade, Roy began his productive life in a coal mine. Over the many years of his working life, Roy worked at various coal mines for 30 years, operated a farm from 1934 to 1963, worked at Firestone for 20 years from 1952 until 1972, and owned and operated the Williamson Tavern and Café along with his wife.

He met his wife, Louise Marilyn Montgomery, at a dance in 1933. They were united in marriage on March 31, 1934, in Chariton. Nine children were born into this family - Louise Genevieve, Darlene Leone, Retta Mae, Edward Eugene, Roy Wayne, Marilyn Kay, Sandra Diane, Larry William and Carol Sue. Roy and Louise enjoyed 64 years of blissful marriage.

Roy was baptized Lutheran.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Louise and Marilyn; two sons-in-law, Junior Maassen and James Mundy; two brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter; one grandson and one great-grandson.

Survivors include his wife Louise, three sons, Gene and wife Sharon Briggs of Grimes, Roy and wife Paulette Briggs of Des Moines, and Lary and wife Lesta Briggs of Woodward; four daughters, Darlene and husband Veral Chadwick, Retta and husband Eugene Chiri, Sandy and husband Jerry Shriver, and Carol and husband Dave Forst, all of Williamson; 18 grandsons, 19 granddaughters; 19 great-grandson, and 21 great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law, Elzene Hutchings and Nellie Briggs of Chariton and many other relatives.

Roy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, 1998, at the Fielding Funeral Home with David Tyree officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Lon Maassen, Larry Chiri, Jeff Briggs, Gary Briggs, Jim Mundy, Mike Briggs, Jerry Shriver and David Forst. Chris Forst was an honorary bearer.
