John Walter Huffman was born in Irwin Township, the son of John Walter Sr. and Catherine Elizabeth Ghost Huffman. On January 13, 1837, he married Christena Hoffman. He and Christena were the parents of John Lewis, Mary Polly (Martin), Margaret H. (Gilmore), Sarah E. (Martin), Elizabeth (Phipps), Caroline (Galloway), Josephine (Beighlea, Vogan), James, William John, Catherine (Jones, Thornberry), Walter Lowrey, Daniel and Henry Barkey G. Huffman.
