Born in Irwin Township, she was the daughter of John Walter and Christena (Huffman) Huffman Jr. (The name was changed to Hoffman.) On September 24, 1874, she became the second wife of Martin Van Buren Phipps. They were the parents of Van Lewis, Walter Cassidy, Clarence Floyd, Sarah M. (Surrena), Ettley Elizabeth (Bailey) and James Lowry Phipps.
