Christmas 1950 Gift to customr's of Olive Garage Owned and Operated by Ed Gran and George Stockhill.

Has a 1951 calendar and Olive Gran, Scotland, SD on rear. Ed's brother, Lawrence Gran, worked at this gas station in 1948.

Olive Garage, operated by Edward Gran in the late 1940's is part of the Historic 1899 Olive Hotel Property at 5th & Main in downtown Miles City, Montana.

NOTES ON PHOTO:
Unlike the 1972 postcard of this same motel, this postcard features the "AAA" logo. The car in the photo appears to be a very eary 1950's Ford.

Someone scratched out "Ed Gran" but the ink matches that used for writing the message. However, it could also be an indication that someone else purchased the motel prior to the August 10, 1955 postmark.

Dear Kendell,
Arrived here today from Yellowstone. On to Glacier Nat'l Park tomorrow. Had to have a fire in our Yellowstone cottage last night - very cold. All goes well.

Appears to be "Miles City" but the remainder doesn't look like Montana or MT.

POSTAL SERVICE HISTORY:
The penny postcard ended when the 2-cent postcard rate became effective Jan 1, 1952 and remained in effect until
Aug 1, 1958 when it increased to 3-cents so the postage on the card authenticates the age of the card.

The zip code system started July 1, 1963 and Zip + 4
in 1983. Consequently, unlike the 1972 postcard, neither the printed motel address or the recipient's address includes a zip code.

ED & GLADYS GRAN MOTEL HISTORY:
Ed and Gladys Gran operated this "Log Cabin Motel" in Livingston, MT in the early 1950's and then sold it and purchased the Mountain View Motel in Bozeman. It is known that Ed & Gladys owned and operated Olive's Garge, part of the Historic Olive Hotel Property, in Miles City in 1949. Best estimate is that Ed and Gladys sold this motel
about 1955. It is also known that Ed and Gladys had already sold the Mountain View Motel in Bozeman and moved back to Miles City before 1962. This postcard carries the name Brandt's motel and the 1972 postcard clearly has "Brandt's" on the motel sign in spite of "Brands Motel" on the rear.

CARD HISTORY:
Del Gran, nephew of Ed and Gladys, purchased this card on eBay on March 25, 2012 for $1.15 plus $1.00 shipping or $2.15 total.. The photo of the motel is very much like my memories when our parents made the trip from Scotland, SD to Livingston, MT to visit Uncle Ed and Aunt Gladys Gran. There was a restaurant across the street with excellent food, where we ate most of our meals.

We arrived home on Sat July 8. It was nice to see you. We
drove to Santa Cruz yesterday on the ocean. Nice and Cool.
I am back to work and everybody is fine. This motel we stayed
