John Heinz was an Internal Revenue Gauger, beginning in 1885. He had also been associated with his brother Fred Heinz and Mr. Fisher in the law firm of Heinz & Fisher. He was a director of the American Commercial & Savings Bank, and before that a director of the Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank. He raised his family in the apartment on the 3rd floor of the bank building at 218 Harrison Street. He had been retired for a number of years due to heart ailments.
