John Heinz was an Internal Revenue Gauger, beginning in 1885. He had also been associated with his brother Fred Heinz and Mr. Fisher in the law firm of Heinz & Fisher. He was a director of the American Commercial & Savings Bank, and before that a director of the Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank. He raised his family in the apartment on the 3rd floor of the bank building at 218 Harrison Street. He had been retired for a number of years due to heart ailments.

"He was a genial, kind and sympathetic and a royal pal with his bosom friends and closer acquaintances. He loved the great outdoors and nature in all its glory. His annual fishing pilgrimages to the northern lakes with his friends were the occasions for much enjoyment." Davenport Times, December 8, 1927

"He was a man of mature judgment and strong convictions and to his credit be it said that one always knew exactly where he stood. Candor, at times even approaching bluntness, was one of his outstanding characteristics but with it he retained an open mind and we have known him to use all the force of his strong character in furthering an idea which had perhaps originally not found favor with him." Resolution adopted after his death by the Board of Directors of the American Commercial and Savings Bank, December 19, 1927.
