Henry was raised in Davenport and began learning the printer's trade at age 14 in the office of Der Demokrat, a daily German language newspaper. In about 1882 he moved to Muscatine and worked for other newspapers. He became the editor and owner of "Der Correspondent", a 12 page weekly newspaper published in German, from 1889 to 1907. It then was combined with another newspaper and published in German as the "Der Herold" until 1921. The newspaper continued in English until 1932 as "The Muscatine Herold".

Henry focused on political, sociology, and economic questions of the day and was known for intelligent discussion of public questions.
