Alfonse “Al” J. Bertram of 224 E. Cotton St., died Saturday; Nov. 25, 1989, at St. Agnes Hospital.

He was born in Johnsburg, a son of Anton and Rose Schmitz Bertram. He married Julie Wettstein at St. Michael’s Church in Dotyville. Mr. Bertram served with the United States Army during World War II. He was employed by Northern Casket Co. of Fond du Lac for 19 years and later by Mercury marine for 16 years. He was currently employed by the Knights of Colujmbus No. 664.

Mr. Bertram was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the church’s Holy Name Society and St. Joseph’s Society, the Prayer and Worship Group, St. Mary’s Ushers Society, the Pi8lgrim Virgin Group, the Catholic Knights, Knights of Columbus No. 664, the Catholic War Veterans and Mercury Marine Retirees Lodge No. 1947.

He was a volunteer in various other services including Eucharistic Minister, perpetual Adoration Participant and the Loaves and Fishes program.

Survivors include three sons, Norm of Fond du Lac, John R. and his wife Susan of Fond du Lac and Roger and his wife Carla of Scofield; two daughters, Kathryn Schumacher and her husband Joseph of Fond du Lac and Ruth Schumacher and her husband Eric of Cedarburg; four brothers, Alex and his wife Loretta of Fond du Lac; Alois and his wife Ludwina, Henry and his wife Julitta and Edwin and his wife Lyla all of St. Peter; two sisters, Julia Braun and her husband Ambrose of North Fond du Lac and Frances Vander Grinten of Eden; seven grandchildren, Jill Bertram, Beth Brent and Sara Schumacher and Cory and Andrew Bertram, all of Fond du Lac, and Jacklyn Bertram of Scofield. Mr. Bertram was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Matthew, Christ and Fred.

The Rite of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Zacherl Funeral Home, followed by services at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Peter Drenzek will officiate. Entombment will follow at Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Cemetery.

Friends and relatives may call Monday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Zacherl Funeral Home, where a parish vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church.
