Mrs. Vivian Maxine Mayes, 71, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, 1980, at her home in Hillsdale. Daughter of the late Fred and Clara Ethel Dunn Beets, she was born in Hillsdale July 22,1909.

She was a graduate of Spring Hill High School. Dec. 24, 1927 , she was married to Roy. F. Mayes at the First Christian Church in Paola. During the wartime the family spent seven years in Oregon, near Portland, where Mr. Mayes worked in the shipyards. She lived the rest of her life in the Hillsdale area.

Mrs. Mayes was a sales clerk at Stockwell's Drug Store and later at Sutherland's Home Center. She retired in 1973. She had been a member of the First Christian Church of Paola for many years until transportation became a problem and she then transferred her membership to the Hillsdale Presbyterian Church. She also belong to the Wat So Ever Club.

Her husband, one brother, Dean Beets, and two great-grandchildren preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Margaret, wife of Roy Thomas of Osawatomie, a son, Keith Mayes, Garnett; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline, wife of Del Smith,and Marjorie, wife of Lloyd Boehm, both of Hillsdale, and Jean, wife of Dr. Maury Merrill, Logan, Utah; six brothers, Max Beets, Olathe, Fred Beets, Spearfish, S.D., Robert Beets, Mesa, AZ Rex Beets, Paola, Bill Beets and Kenneth Beets, at the home farm near Hillsdale.

Services were held at 2pm, Saturday, at the Wilson and Son Chapel in Paola. The Rev. Eugene McMahon, pastor of the First Christian Church, was the officiant.

"The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" were sung by Mrs. Joyce Molina, accomanied by Mrs. Virginia Reese.

Grandsons serving as pallbearers were Harold Mayes, Mike Mayes, Bob Mayes, Steve Mayes, Larry Alexander and Dean Lickteig. Burial was in the Hillsdale Cemetery.
