Cora Dean Cole was born in Harden, Missouri, on January 17, 1870 and so spent the first nine years of her life there. Her young life was a happy one as she grew up with her family and neighbors.

At age ten, she migrated northwest with her parents and family. The traveling was slow by wagon train but the safest way in this Indian territory as well the bandits. Cora had a part in the family chores enroute. Her duties even were to help gather buffalo clips for fire—a necessary enterprise in this long drive through the plains area where wood was scarce. They settled in Hardin, Montana, for a time but found this area rather unproductive from lack of water so moved on west to the beautiful Gallatin Valley. Many moves were made after that but Cora, along with the oldest part of the family, found employment in and around Livingston, Montana.

Cora married Dudley Gilbert on May 24, 1902 in Clyde Park, Montana. They raised a family of five boys and one girl. They were Methodists and faithful in attending church.

Cora became a seamstress and made many dresses for the people of Livingston. She did beautiful work on wedding dresses. A part of her work as cook and waiting upon the family for board and room gave her a greater knowledge of the finer art of cooking.

There was a shortage of doctors and nurses in those days and traveling was slow and painful. Many women with ability along these lines were at a premium. Raised in the old school of experience and necessity, Cora had also gained much knowledge of antidotes and first aid in case of emergency. She was sympathetic and reassuring with patients and was oft called upon to serve.

Cora died at the age of 63 and is buried in Clyde Park, Montana.
