Dudley Irving Gilbert was known to his family and acquaintances as Irv. He was the firstborn of Dudley and Cora (Cole) Gilbert. His father recorded that it was a long and difficult birth with a grandmother and two aunts in attendance, and a young doctor who arrived almost too late.
Irv was raised on his mother's homestead about one mile south of Clyde Park, Montana. He began his schooling at the Woodman Hall on Rock Creek. When he and his brothers were big enough to work, they hired out to various relatives and neighbors. Irv worked for his uncle Phil Gilbert. When Irv finished grade school at Clyde Park, he went to a trade school in Bozeman. He took bee keeping and animal husbandry along with other subjects. Upon completion of his schooling, he was employed at the Billings Creamery.
Irv was also employed at Fromberg, Montana, by a Mr. Pithod, who had an apiary. It was there Irv was able to put his bee keeping to a test. He enjoyed his work and learned from the practical experience. During World War I and the aftermath, honey was a popular sweetening that took the place of sugar.
Irv was a very good fisherman so he kept his friends and family supplied with his catch. He enjoyed the company of others, visiting, and swapping yarns about the big ones that got away. He had a great sense of humor and had fun making others laugh. He was often called upon to play the part of a clown at rodeos, a part that he acted well. He was also very musically talented and could play any instrument he put his mind to.
Irv married Freda Frances Abbott on June 10, 1927. Freda was from Wisconsin, and in 1930 when Freda's parents were elderly and couldn't run their small farm any longer, she and Irv decided to move to Hancock, Wisconsin, to take over the farm. The Irv Gilbert family remained in Wisconsin but made many visits to his family in Montana. He died November 2, 1942 at the age of 39. His funeral was Friday, November 13, 1942, at the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock, Wisconsin.
Irv was predeceased by his mother, Cora, in 1933. He was survived by his wife, son, father, four brothers: Ford, Herb, Lester and Walt; sister, Mary Stephenson; two step-sisters, Evelyn Chapel and Dorothy Gilbert; three half-sisters, Jean, Joan and Kay, as well as numerous nieces and nephews."
