Ira Z. was a son of Ira Bird McKay & Harriet Huff. He was born near Hillsboro, Scott County, Miss., where his family farmed. He met his wife, Delilah E. Marble at a Methodist Camp Meeting around Crystal Springs, Copiah. They married Dec. 28, 1876, in Claiborne.

Ira was a kind man and joked a lot. The family had many, many friends in the neighborhood and callers often came to dinner, including preachers. Ira was well groomed and always wore his suit jacket when eating at the table. He liked to hunt turkeys and kept his turkey caller on the mantel. He farmed in Claiborne County, close to Old Brandywine, which is extinct. Brandywine was somewhat close to Hermanville. Ira Z. was a devout Christian and superintendent of the Sunday School for Sarepta Church for a long time. His friends missed him a lot when he passed on.

His ancestors came from South Carolina and they were devout Methodists and some were ministers.

At the time of his death he was living in Bogalusa, Louisiana, with his daughter, Flora Starnes. Both Flora and Floy took care of him. Martha McKay
