Carl's parents were Ira Zeno McKay and Delilah E. Marble of Claiborne County Mississippi. He was born in Claiborne Co., Miss., near to Old Brandywine, now extinct, was near Hermanville. Sarepta Church, near their home, was important in their lives. The family was Methodist and devout. Morton Carl also went to school, with his siblings, at the back of the church.

He was first named "Carl Morton McKay" and as an adult he changed it to "Morton Carl." It had to do with the telegraph and his initials, which became "M. C."

Carl married Ellen Hall. Children were Carl Morton Jr., Ralph Hall and Marjorie McKay. The family lived in Arkansas for a time before returning to Bogalusa.
