THE CHARITON LEADER
Chariton, Iowa
Tuesday, August 11, 1942
Mrs. John Sharp, of Chariton, was fatally injured by a fall from the embankment near the overhead bridge of the Burlington railroad, west of the square over highway 34 last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. Sharp was walking across the bridge going north when she looked up to see a freight train headed toward her. Although she was in no danger from the train, according to spectators, she became frightened and hurried off to the side and fell, breaking her neck.
The train stopped and the train crew aided in carrying her to the Keith Gartin home nearby where she died. In her fall she rolled around the edge of the bridge to the sidewalk running under the tracks.
