Charles was born and grew up on his family's dairy farm near Brainerd, Minnesota. He had to quit school to work on the farm, due to World War II, when his older brothers entered the service.

He married Dorothy Albers on Dec 31, 1948 and they had two children, Charles and Janice. He was employed as a custodian-engineer for many years by the Brainerd School District. He was a member of the EUM Church. He was a member of the Brainerd Archery Club and Brainerd Snodeos. He enjoyed gardening and canning his produce - especially pickles. He also enjoyed fishing, gun and bow hunting, playing cards, reading, and working jigsaw puzzles.

Mildred Sandberg Dailey is his last surviving sibling.
