Donald grew up on the family dairy farm near Brainerd, Minnesota. He had an interest in tractors and once after visiting another boy and seeing his scoop truck he went home and built his own. He built a wonderful collection which he displayed at the fair. He was also interested in photography and developed his own film in the milkroom on the farm. In 1936 they got electricity on the farm, Donald, at 18 rigged up an automatic bottle cleaner for their milk bottles.

He served in WWII. His mission was to fly over the Panama Canal and protect it.

On Nov 11, 1944 he married Bernice Olga Horkey and they lived in Minneapolis. They had 2 children: Rosalie and Donald.

Donald died of cancer Nov 2, 1973 at the age of 55.
