Lyle and his twin brother Leon grew up on the family's dairy farm near Brainerd. Lyle was the mischevious twin, always enjoying a good prank.

He and Bernice Strobel eloped and were married in Minneapolis Oct. 28, 1942. He served in the US Navy on an oil tanker to Europe and a landing craft in the Pacific during WWII. Following the war he owned the first Toyota dealership in Brainerd.

He and Bernice had 4 children: Nancy, Mary, Thomas and Lynn.
