Mary "Effie" (Heddins) Adams was born in the Crooked Creek community of Van Zandt County, a child of Isaiah Lafayette Heddins and Julia Ann (Ballard) Heddins. She was the second-born of fourteen children, but her older brother had died at birth, so in effect she was the oldest. Effie had a twin brother who died at birth. Effie was the only girl, born into a farming, Baptist family. Effie's paternal grandparents were James Heddins & Clarinda Lee Brewster who moved from Illinois to Texas in 1853. Her maternal grandparents were Joshua Ballard, a Civil War veteran, and Louisa Boulton who moved from Alabama to Texas in about 1854.

Effie married John "Marvin" Adams on 22 Dec. 1901 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Marvin was a son of Jim & Ella (Lewis) Adams. Marvin and Effie had three children together.

Effie came a widow at the age of 50 in 1932 when Marvin suddenly died of a heart attack. After his death, Effie supported herself by selling eggs, butter & cream. She raised chickens and could tell which chickens had layed which eggs. She sold & shipped cream to Blue Valley, Kansas. She owned milk cows and a separator.

Effie had long hair, but rolled it up in a bun during the day.

In late 1943 Effie had a stroke and lay in bed paralized for several weeks before she died. She was buried next to her husband at Oak Hill Cemetery.
