John Ivan Heddins was a son of Isaiah Lafayette Heddins & Julia Ann (Ballard) Heddins. He was born in the Crooked Creek community of Van Zandt County, Texas into a farming family. John's paternal grandparents were James Heddins & Clarinda Lee Brewster who moved from Illinois to Texas in 1853. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Ballard, a Civil War veteran, and Louisa Boulton who moved from Alabama to Texas in about 1854.

John married Mary "Ellen" (Barber) Heddins on 4 Oct. 1908 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Ellen was a daughter of James A. Barber and Lucinda Rushing. John & Ellen had five sons and two daughters.

John Heddins was a hard-working farmer. In 1929 John took out a loan to make a crop, mortgaging the farm he had inherited from his father. In October of that year when the stock market crashed, John lost his farm. He continued farming on rented property as well as working as a laborer to make ends meet. A few years later John became a Baptist minister. He preached throughout East Texas in revival services and also pastored several churches in Van Zandt County and later Polk County.

In the mid-1960s when it became too difficult to live on their own, John and Ellen moved to Anderson nursing home in Grand Saline, Texas. John died at the age of 78, succumbing to pneumonia. Ellen outlived him by almost 13 years.
