Joseph Isaiah ("Joe") Heddin(s) was a son of Isaiah Lafayette Heddins & Julia Ann (Ballard) Heddins. He was born in the Crooked Creek community of Van Zandt County, Texas into a farming, Baptist family. Joe's paternal grandparents were James Heddins & Clarinda Lee Brewster who moved from Illinois to Texas in 1853. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Ballard, a Civil War veteran, and Louisa Boulton who moved from Alabama to Texas in about 1854.

Joe was a small-framed man and said to have been somewhat mentally slow.

On Sept. 14, 1919, a few days before his 24th birthday, Joe Heddins married Vula Mary Scott in Van Zandt County, Texas. Joe & Vula had no children.

After Joe's death, Vula moved to Sweetwater, Texas and lived with family members. Although the joint tombstone at Myrtle Springs Cemetery lists her name & year of birth, she was buried in Sweetwater.
