Allen R. Heddins was a son of Isaiah Lafayette Heddins & Julia Ann (Ballard) Heddins. He was born in the Crooked Creek community of Van Zandt County, Texas into a farming family. Allen's paternal grandparents were James Heddins & Clarinda Lee Brewster who moved from Illinois to Texas in 1853. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Ballard, a Civil War veteran, and Louisa Boulton who moved from Alabama to Texas in about 1854.

At the young age of three, Allen choked to death on a wood screw that he had put into his mouth.
